An Exercise

I often listen to songs I love as if I am hearing them for the first time. I'll even go so far as to assume I am someone else who actually has never heard it before, whether it be somebody I know or an imaginary personality type. I find that when things are new there is a certain strangeness and feeling of surprise. I suppose maybe I'm trying to recreate that feeling that one gets when they immediately enjoy a song. Some part of it, the melody, a lyric, or something subtle that catches you and for whatever reason you say "This is good."

Pretending to hear, see, feel, taste etc. ANYTHING for the first time is to feel totally in the now. Not comparing with past experiences or songs, and not having that familiar expectation that comes after you've heard a song a hundred times over. Just allow your mind to pass no judgment and give every note your full attention, new or old, and you can find beauty like you've never known.

Don't get me wrong. I almost always burn myself out on new songs that I enjoy right away. I'm comfortable with this addiction. With all that said, I've played these songs way too many damn times this week:

Wild Beasts - The Empty Nest

Wild Beasts - All The King's Men

Enjoy.

Need to smile?

I can has blog?

I was peer pressured to create a blog by a fellow music enthusiast. So far so good. I'll post music news and stuff and videos and things and my playlists etc. and things which I feel are worth sharing and crap.

Listen to the show! That's what I really care about. It airs every Tuesday night form 11pm to 12am on 89.9 NPR in Jacksonville. I believe it reaches as far as St. Augustine and perhaps Fernandina, you might need an aluminum foil helmet to pick it up further than that.

I'm also happily employed at CD Connection in Jacksonville beach and I'm an advocate of BUYING music. CD's, Vinyl, Tapes, what have you. When the internet finally implodes on itself and all the computers in the world crash those of us with physical evidence of our love for music will be the ones on top again. Today is the first Vinyl Sunday at CD Connection. Jeffles and I will be jamming to Nurses, Panda Bear and various selections from the Animal Collective collection, Yim Yames (beautiful!), Neutral Milk Hotel, Fever Ray, Besnard Lakes, Blitzen Trapper, and I'm sure we will sift through some oldies as well. I should start digging for that Shuggie Otis now...I know its there somewhere.

Dang. Music.

Bye!
